The BYU Comprehensive Clinic offers affordable counseling services for individuals, couples, and families in Utah County. The Clinic functions as a research and training facility. Counseling is provided by graduate student interns under the close supervision of experienced faculty who are licensed therapists. In addition to therapy, the clinic offers various psychological assessments.

In my dating career, I would often get asked “so…what do you study?” Then came a moment of decision: do I tell the truth? On the occasions that I chose to tell the truth, what ensued was often a little awkward for him…and for me. After all, pornography isn’t the most comfortable topic to discuss on first dates. However, I have since become more comfortable talking about my chosen field of study, and strongly believe in the importance of discussing the topic of pornography! In this post, I am going to briefly discuss two questions that I’ve studied over the past year.

I remember wondering as an adolescent how nice it must be to be an adult – to enjoy complete independence. I envisioned a carefree world where I could balance all of my responsibilities perfectly. I now find that the older I get, the more fictional this idea becomes. The reality is that life can be a constant circus act of juggling family responsibilities, work commitments, educational pursuits and the hustle of trying to please everyone. Finding balance in the midst of a fire fight of competing interests inevitably causes stress, thus the need to learn to cope well with stress is universal.

We’ve all felt hurt or offended by another. Feeling saddened by the inconsiderate, insensitive, or immoral actions of others is normal and even inevitable. But what we do with those feelings in the long run may have a large impact on our well-being.

Many men think therapy entails sitting in a room (or lying on a chaise) across from a bespectacled stranger and talking about feelings, secrets, and what their mother didn’t do for them in their childhood. Because of cultural perceptions of therapy, many men think that therapy is only for women, and attending therapy may feel unnatural or bring feelings of embarrassment. The BYU Comprehensive Clinic is primarily a learning facility for students obtaining graduate degrees in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, and Marriage and Family Therapy through Brigham Young University. Clinicians at the Clinic are not able to see people who have a history of extreme suicidal tendencies, addiction, self-harm, or who need counseling by order of court mandate.
